Rebel MP James Morris explains why he defied PM

HALESOWEN and Rowley Regis MP James Morris outlined his reasons for rebelling against the Government in last night's House of Lords reform vote.

He said: “The House of Lords does need to change, but these proposals would just create a new set of full-time politicians with their own mandates and different political composition.

“15 year non-renewable terms would mean that members of the new House of Lords would not be accountable to anybody once elected and new Governments elected in General Elections would be unable to introduce any meaningful reforms because most members of the Lords would be there based on elections held five or ten years earlier."

He added: “I voted against the proposals because I want the Government to go back, try to build a consensus around a workable alternative and then put that to the people in a referendum, rather than trying to rush major constitutional change through Parliament without consulting the electorate.”
