Halesowen by the Sea is washed out by cuts

SWINGEING town hall cuts have claimed another casualty - the popular Halesowen by the Sea event aimed at driving up trade for struggling retailers.

The August fun designed to bring traditional holiday fever to the centre of the country has been axed from Dudley Council’s events’ calendar.

The wacky day used to be organised by the town centre manager, but now that post has been scrapped and there is no money in the coffers to pay for it.

Halesowen Chamber of Trade chairman Steve Fitzpatrick said: “I understand that budgets are tight, but it’s about priorities and we have to make sure the town centres survive.

“I am sure Dudley Council has tried its best, but it’s a bitter pill to swallow.”

The annual event attracted hundreds of families for a day of seaside fun and games, including donkey rides, face painting, Punch and Judy shows and a giant sandpit.

Shoppers enjoyed a variety of entertainment including street performances and stilt walkers.
