A SELF-STYLED Ninja warrior who nearly sliced his foot off playing with his Samurai sword came close to being gunned down by armed cops in Oldbury .

Bungling Ninja Daniel Underhill phoned 999 demanding assistance after injuring himself but then provoked an armed response unit by threatening to “chop up” customers in his local shop.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that 26-year-old “came close” to being shot by armed officers after walking towards them with the sword raised above his head.

After moving within ten feet of the armed officers Underhill, who was suffering from depression and alcohol abuse, finally gave himself up.

Miss Sarah Hurd defending Underhill said: "It was only when he was in the police station that he realised just how close to death he had come to being shot."

Underhill, who had bragged to the police he was a Ninja warrior despite being so inept with his sword, admitted using threatening words and behaviour and possessing the sword. He was jailed by Recorder Michael Wasik for fifteen months after the judge deemed the offences warranted an immediate jail term.

Recorder Wasik said: “Police were alarmed for their own safety and that of others and were ready to shoot.

"The police are entitled to expect, when called out to serious incidents like this, that they will be backed up by the courts."

Defending Underhill, of Chaddesley Court, Geoffrey Dann said: “The fact he came close to being shot was a wake up call.”

Mr Dann also said that his defendant had not planned to hurt anyone and gave himself up as soon as he realised the officers were armed.

The incident happened on Sunday, June 3 this year and Underhill, who did not wear all black to court, had been remanded in custody since.
