Controversial plans for a 17-metre phone mast in the ground of Halesowen Town FC have been thrown out by Dudley councillors.

Furious protestors had raised concerns about health fears - particularly among children in nearby schools - when the heard about plans for the mast.

Nearby resident Mary Gale, of Beach Street, said: "We are over the moon at the news.

"We have previously objected to other applications in the area, but they went through and we thought this might go the same way.

"There's enough furniture in the sky as it is."

Ward councillor Jennifer Dunn said: "I'm very pleased this application was turned down.

"We have not proved or disproved these phone masts can cause illness or injury to someone.

"My fear is if it's at a sports ground, I do not think it will be an ideal location, especially with large crowds watching.

"I don't think it's the right place."
