A Halesowen schoolgirl has been named West Midlands Police's Young Person of the Year after starring in a road safety DVD.

Alexandra Tolley, who attends Newfield Primary School, planned and filmed the public awareness film to highlight traffic concerns outside schools including illegal parking, speeding and drivers using mobile phones.

Alex even played the role of a car crash victim hit by a speeding driver to push home the road safety message.

Dudley chief superintendent Stuart Johnson said: "This was an excellent project for the local Neighbourhood Police Team to work on with students.

“Road safety is often raised at our community meetings the DVD pulls no punches and will leave a lasting impression on viewers.”

He added: "Alex did an excellent job of making this scenario look realistic and through the DVD she has championed road safety and highlighted concerns to pupils, parents and motorists. I thank her for her passionate involvement."

The DVD which was produced along with students from Halesowen College is also being shown to parents and offending drivers to raise their awareness on the risks of speeding and inconsiderate parking.

Alexandra picked up the West Midlands Police Authority Young Person of the Year award at the annual West Midlands Police Awards Ceremony on Wednesday.
