Residents urged to be a flu fighter

VULNERABLE residents are being urged to protect themselves from flu by getting immunised this winter.
For some people classed as at risk – over 65s, pregnant women, those with a lowered immunity or long term health condition – flu can be a really serious illness and is a highly contagious infection which anyone can catch.
The virus can also increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, or can make existing conditions worse. In the worst cases, flu can result in a stay in hospital, or even death.
Leading by example, the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Melvyn Mottram, had his free flu-jab at his own GP surgery in Coseley.
Cllr Mottram said:“I urge everyone at risk from flu to protect themselves and their families and have a free flu jab like me. It’s quick, simple and free for anyone in an ‘at risk’ group. A five minute appointment at your GP surgery could save your life”.
West Midlands Ambulance Service is also encouraging the jab among residents and has also trained up some staff to vaccinate colleagues.
Anyone with flu symptoms are urged to recuperate at home, with rest, warmth, water and paracetamol.
