A MANIAC Dudley motorist has been banned from the roads after speeding through road works on the M5 at 100mph.

Shaquile Smith, aged 20, had earlier driven through a traffic light on red on the outskirts of Worcester and a passenger friend was injured when he eventually mounted the island at junction five of the motorway near Droitwich.

Recorder Rachel Brand QC, who disqualified him from driving for four years, told Smith he had a “positive side”, avoiding dishonesty or violence.

The Recorder added: “But when you’re in a car you behave like a maniac,” she added. When police were following you, you put your foot down – you created an obvious and very grave danger.

“You drove at twice the speed limit operative at that time on the motorway, which was coned off for road works.

“It’s absolutely obvious you could have killed someone – your friends in the car or anyone else on the road.”

Smith, of Terry Street, was appearing at Worcester Crown Court for sentencing after admitting dangerous driving, being on the road while banned and having no insurance. He was sent to a young offenders institution for eight months.

Michael Conry, prosecuting, said police saw Smith driving at speed through a red temporary traffic light in Ombersley Road, Worcester, in the early hours on May 29.

He was later seen travelling at up to 100mph towards Droitwich before mounting the junction island, where his front wheel collapsed.

At the time he had been banned from driving and was required to take a test before going the road again because of endorsements on his licence.

Makhan Singh, defending, said Smith's friend, a passenger, suffered a twisted ankle in the collision.

Mr Singh said that, although Smith had driven irresponsibly after going out with his friends to a nightclub, he had the “good sense” not to drink and, fortunately, traffic was light at that time of night.
