THE Bishop of Dudley rolled up his sleeves and got stuck in at a Dudley community café as part of the Church of England’s Lent campaign.

He donned rubber gloves and an apron and washed up after lunch at the Retreat Community Café at St. Francis’ Church yesterday (Thursday) to mark #Washday15.

The campaign encourages Christians to go out and wash anything and everything to make a difference in their community to reflect Jesus washing the feet of his disciples at the start of the Easter story.

The Right Reverend Graham Usher said: “As we approach Holy Week we remember how Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, a symbol of how he cared for others in his community and was here to serve them.

"It’s important we all remember, not least Bishops, that we love our neighbour through caring for them and it’s been a great privilege to be with the community at St Francis to do their washing up.

"It was hard work but great fun.”

Churchwarden Lorraine Robbins, who runs the café with John Barrett, said: “He’s done a fantastic job in the kitchen and we will take him on whenever he is available.”
