A NUMBER of community and youth groups are joining forces to help regenerate Wordsley's King George V Park.

Also known as Wordsley Park, the Lawnswood Road common will be the base for a new project launched recently by the park’s friends group.

Chairman of the Friends Group for Wordsley Park, ward councillor Derrick Hemingsley, said he wants to regenerate the area with help from young people.

He has so far recruited children from nearby Belle Vue Primary School and the 1st Wordsley Boys’ Brigade, as well as young members of the The 4US Project, based at The Source Youth Centre, to spearhead the development.

Wordsley’s Boys’ Brigade company kick started the project on Monday night (May 18) as members, aged between 4 and 10, help to weed an area that is due to be landscaped.

Cllr Hemingsley said: “I have a passion that this park will be loved by the whole community and, to this end, we have 1st Wordsley Boys’ Brigade starting this project.

“We have a number of community groups coming together to improve this great park over the coming months.

“Belle Vue Primary School is taking over the three raised flower beds and the Source Youth Club is going to plan and landscape an area.

“It is a great way of getting the community, especially young people who live in the area, involved in looking after our local park.”

Members of The Friends Group for Wordsley Park will be painting three raised flower beds in vivid colours before the school takes over ownership.

Throughout the next few months, pupils will spend one afternoon a week planting vegetables, herbs and flowers in the three beds as part of a school project.

The 4US Project, a group made up of young people aged 13 to 25 with disabilities, will help design a flower area in the park.

All the equipment needed for the regeneration, such as trowels and gloves, as well as the flowers, vegetables and herbs will be provided by the friends group.
