RESPONSIBLE pet ownership is being promoted at an animal action day next week with borough owners having the chance to have their pets microchipped for free.

The event, being hosted by Dudley Council and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), is taking place at Mary Stevens Park activity centre, in Stourbridge.

Any dog or cat owner from the borough can take their pet along on Tuesday (September 8), between 10.30am and 3.30pm, to get them microchipped.

From April 2016 it will be a legal requirement to have dogs chipped, and RSPCA and Dudley Council staff will be on hand to do it for free – with a donation for the charity being requested.

On the day, RSPCA officers will also share general pet care advice such as the benefits of getting a collar and an identification tag.

Councillor Rachel Harris, cabinet member for health and well-being, said: “The new legislation being introduced next April will mean that all dogs will need to be microchipped.

“People can take advantage of the offer at Mary Stevens Park to get their pets tagged now or take advice on just how easy it is to get done.”

Microchipping ensures that missing dogs can be re-united with their owners quickly and effectively. Those attending are asked to take dogs along on their lead and to carry cats in securely closed carriers.
