SCAMMERS have been knocking on doors in Dudley offering cheap burglar alarms.

Dudley Council’s trading standards service has warned residents to be wary of the cold callers, who claim a free or heavily discounted alarm system is available with a guaranteed police response.

Once installed, people are hit with a compulsory and lengthy monitoring contract that does not actually guarantee a police response.

It is also extortionately priced, sometimes costing the consumer thousands of pounds.

Those targeted are often elderly or vulnerable people who are led to believe that the alarm system is necessary due to a fabricated increase in local crime levels.

People are also often persuaded to opt for a quick installation, preventing them from having the opportunity to consult with a friend or relative first.

Tony Oakman, strategic director of people at Dudley Council, said: "We have concerns about the sales practices of some companies who offer free or reduced price installation but fail to mention that in order to qualify you have to take out an expensive and ongoing monitoring and maintenance package.

"All ongoing costs should be declared upfront to enable people to make informed decisions and we are asking residents to remain extra vigilant when being approached about such deals.

"Alternative local options from installers who have been vetted by trading standards are available in the Dudley Fix-A-Home brochure.”

Dudley Council’s Telecare Service offers a range of monitored alarm systems that operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The standard cost is £13.70 per month and is usually free of charge to Dudley Council tenants.

All new users to the service can have a six week trial at no cost.
