WOODSETTON residents are fed up of speeding drivers using their road as a rat-run during rush hour.

Motorists frequently hit speeds of up to 60mph along Brook Street according to James Baker, who lives just off the busy road.

The 77-year-old said: "The speed is tremendous, they come belting it down from Bourne Street and then hit the bend on Brook Street, lose control and end up in someone's garden. There have been about four or five walls knocked down now."

He continued: "The police have been out with their cameras several times but they come at 11am and people have already took their children to school and gone to work by then. They need to be here at 8am or 4.30pm, that's when it's worse."

Mr Baker said he would like to see traffic calming measures installed to slow drivers down.

"This has been a long standing issue and I really think Dudley Council ought to do something," he added.

Upper Gornal and Woodsetton Councillor Adam Aston agreed that something needed to be done.

He said: "There have been a number of accidents and near-misses over recent years through motorists using excessive speed so I was very disappointed to see that this location has not been included as a site for forthcoming road investment.

"It is becoming very apparent there is a serious road safety issue with Bourne Street being used as a rat-run during rush hour and speeding traffic at all times of day and night."

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, Dudley's cabinet member for environmental services, said: “We are not aware of any specific reason why traffic volumes in the area should significantly increase on these roads, which serve a large residential area.

"We will continue to monitor the traffic in Bourne Street and Brook Street, as we do all roads in the borough, to inform future traffic projects.”
