CAMPAIGNERS are calling for road safety measures to be put in place in Lower Gornal after a young mum was killed in a car crash.

Vikki Jones, aged 30, was driving in Wood Road, just after 10pm on Friday, September 22 when her car was in collision with a white BMW.

Despite the best efforts of medics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 21-year-old man was arrested from his home in Lower Gornal at around 3am the following morning on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He was later released pending further enquiries.

Since Ms Jones' death, Dudley North MP Ian Austin said he has had many residents get in touch, asking what can be done to improve road safety.

He has now sent letters to those living in the immediate area to ask what safety measures could be put in place and has vowed to work with residents, the police and Dudley Council to find a solution.

Mr Austin said: “Hundreds of residents have already signed a petition asking for the something to be done.

“I have written to everyone in the area asking for their opinion and I’ll be putting pressure on the council to take on board what people are saying as no one wants anything like this to happen again.”

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, Dudley's cabinet member for environmental services, said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family affected by this tragic incident.

"We have been working with police and looking at that particular stretch of road following this incident to see what options, if any, we have to improve safety along there.

"We are also more than happy to listen to the views of ward councillors and the local MP in planning any measures there in the future.”
