A SECRET garden for children with additional needs has been unveiled at Russells Hall Hospital.

A bare piece of land next to the children’s outpatients department has been transformed into a relaxing outdoor environment, featuring a slide, swings and sensory toys.

The idea was suggested by parents at a listening event, who said it would improve the experience for children with additional needs.

The garden costs around £25,000 and was made possible thanks to the hospital's private finance initiative partners Interserve, who donated their time, resources and materials and Rosscomm, who had the specialist flooring fitted and installed the lighting.

The swing, shed, sandpit and canopy were donated by Tesco, who also provided the paint and painted the mural.

Additional funds came from trust staff and members of Arise Church in Kingswinford, who held fundraising events.

Learning disabilities liaison nurse, Jacqui Howells, said: “It is amazing because we know what a difference this secret garden will make not only to our children but also to their families and our staff."

The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Dave Tyler, who officially opened the secret garden, said he was bowled over by the results of such hard work.

He added: “It is fantastic to see the hard work and commitment from everyone involved and I am so pleased to see that such a team effort has resulted in such a wonderful transformation."
