A HISTORIC vintage Stourbridge advertising sign is set to go under the hammer at a specialist collectors’ sale on Friday.

The decorative sign bearing the words 'Webbs' Seeds, Wordsley, Stourbridge' – which is believed to date back to the 1850's – will be up for sale at Cuttlestone's Auctioneers and Valuers in Wolverhampton.

Despite bearing the scars of damage and rusting to the edges, the sign is still expected to fetch in the region of several £100's.

The sign bears a beautifully coloured illustration of delphiniums and is expected to have a broad decorative appeal.

Stourbridge based seed giants Webbs was established in 1850 and remained in the town until the 1960's when the firm was relocated to Chester.

But Webbs advertising signs remain extremely popular with collectors, with those in good condition still selling for around £1,000.

Cuttlestones' valuer Rosie Blackburn revealed: “Vintage advertising signs are hugely collectable, but it's not just hardcore collectors they can attract.”

Interior designers and keen gardeners also like to pick up these signs or it could appeal to anyone who loves floral decor.

A fully illustrated catalogue is available from Cuttlestones and viewing will be taking place on Thursday, June 21st from 10am until 7pm and also on the morning of the sale.

For anyone not able to bid in person, live online, telephone and commission bidding options are available by contacting 01902 421985 or by emailing wolverhampton@cuttlestones.co.uk.
