BRIGHT sparks from Amblecote Primary School have finished runners-up in a county-wide fire safety competition.

The youngsters, representing Dudley, were just a point off top spot but had to be content with silver medals at the West Midlands Fire Safety Final, held at Safeside Nechells in Birmingham.

They earned the right to represent their borough by winning the Dudley Area Schools final in May at Haden Cross Fire Station after qualifying via an online quiz to begin with.

The six class 5B students who won the Dudley finals were Megan Round, Ruby Hollowood, Ashleigh Baynam, Layci Griffiths, Noushka Mason and William Thompson.

Ruby was unable to make the West Midlands final and was replaced by Cameron Mairs.

The youngsters were supported by class teachers Mrs Sarah Barratt and Mrs Adele Brannon, along with headteacher Mrs Ann Mason.

Mrs Barratt said: "We are so proud of all the children for all of their hard work.

"We would like to thank their parents, for all of their support, and the fire service for providing this great opportunity to promote health and safety issues to young children."
