Town growing for gold in Bloom comp

STOURBRIDGE traders and residents are hoping the town will look blooming lovely again this year as they aim to impress the Heart of England in Bloom judges.

Last year the town scooped the coveted gold award for the first time - and in the past two years both Wollescote Park and Mary Stevens Park in Norton scooped prizes for horticultural excellence, beating parks across the entire region.

This time round business bosses, schools and volunteers have been working with the Dudley Council to bring the town to life with flowers, plants and hanging baskets ahead of judging day on Tuesday July 14.

And Stourbridge in Bloom co-ordinators are keeping their green fingers crossed that they will have dressed the town to impress representatives from the Heart of England tourist board as they inspect the town centre and Stourbridge’s parks.

Initiative co-ordinator David Harcourt said: "We’ve got more schools involved this year, which is good news, and a lot more volunteers.

“It’s really very good - and obviously we’re hoping we can win that gold medal again; but we have a new challenge as there will be two new judges this year - so we have to work even harder to convince them we’re still gold medal worthy.”

Stourbridge councillor Les Jones, the borough’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Stourbridge in Bloom is very important to the town’s community and businesses and with so much work going on I’m sure this year will be another success for all involved.”

In the meantime - traders and residents are being urged to spruce up their premises and help keep the town tidy before judging day.

Anyone wishing to hang baskets outside their shop fronts or businesses can call David Harcourt on 01384 378209.
