November is the month when “Remembrance” of lost lives is in our thoughts. Kidderminster townspeople came in hundreds to show their respect for The Fallen at our Parish Church of St Mary’s and All Saints. The Parade led by Sgt Major Keith Newman from Hereford and Worcester Cadets gave testimony to the allegiance of Sovereign and Nation.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns on the Western Front ceased fire, signalling the end of World War 1. This evocative set of dates was echoed in this year’s Armistice Day 2011 attended by the Services and Townspeople of Kidderminster. I joined the President of the British Legion, Larry Billingsley and we laid wreaths at the War Memorial. The Reverend Geoffrey Shilvock from Wolverley conducted a short service of Remembrance.

The 17th Road Peace Service took place at St Ambrose Church, Birmingham Road. It was conducted by Father Douglas Lamb, on Sunday 20th November. The address given by the Rector of Bewdley and Wribbenhall Keith James, touched on the trauma of bereavement and the need to be supportive to one another which this annual service gives to the people affected by road accidents. The Valentines Choir added a musical dimension that was uplifting and sensitive to the occasion. There were readings from Hospital Staff, the Emergency Services and the Press who witness first hand these fatal accidents.

With the coming of the Advent Season, the Switch On of Christmas Lights took place in the Town Centre on Saturday, 19th November. Crowds of happy faces filled Vicar Street and we were duly entertained by local singers, Laura Broad and Benny Jay. Carols were sung by the Choir of St George’s Church and Reverend Rose Lawley reminded us of the Christmas Message of peace and goodwill to all people. We thank Howard Bentham from Hereford and Worcester Radio for comparing the event. I was delighted to accompany Father Christmas as we mingled with the people who came to enjoy this special occasion. Well done to Mia Richie-McKeown who switched on the Christmas Lights of Kidderminster 2011 - a day she will always remember!
