SPECIALISTS from a Brierley Hill law firm has been appointed to the Charity Commission’s approved list of interim managers to ensure confidence in UK charities.

A team of staff from Higgs & Sons, based in Waterfront Business Park, will be required to act in the administration of a charity if the commission considers there has been misconduct or mismanagement.

To be approved, staff had to demonstrate suitable experience in key areas including insolvency and transferring business entities, corporate governance, financial management and charity law expertise.

Kirsty McEwen, head of charities and not for profit, said: “The power to appoint is a quasi-judicial one and can be used only after a statutory inquiry, so we are delighted the commission felt the Higgs team had the requisite level of skill and expertise to undertake this vital function.”

Higgs & Sons has also been focusing on its own charity efforts, raising £138.45 for the Alzheimer’s Society after going Denim for Dementia.

Staff went to work in denim or blue themed clothing to support the society, with everyone taking part donating £1 to boost the firm’s fundraising efforts for their chosen charity of the year.

Tim Jones, a partner in the firm, said: “We are incredibly excited to be working with the Alzheimer’s Society this year.

“The charity does a great deal to help raise the profile of Alzheimer’s at a national level, as well as working tirelessly in and around the region supporting local individuals and families who are affected by the condition.”

Denim for Dementia was one of a series of activities planned to support the society this year, including a memory walk and a charity quiz night.

Last year the firm raised more than £15,000 for the Prince’s Trust and already this year, Higgs’ staff have taken part in the 10K Birmingham Legal Walk raising more over £300 for the Midland Legal Support Trust.
