UP to 75 jobs will be created in Rubery after a leading plastic packaging company relocated its premises to a new “world class facility”.

Aquapak Polymers Limited will begin manufacturing at their new 52,000 sq foot production plant at Hollymoor Point in the next few months.

The move will create a total of 50 direct jobs on the production site and 25 indirect positions for distribution and sub-contractors over the next three years.

The site will develop a ‘super-polymer’ that focuses on strength as well as being both fully recyclable and biodegradable.

Mike Everard, Managing Director of Aquapak said: “This is a world class facility, in a centralised location at the heart of a region known for excellence in manufacturing.

“The site also offers us the flexibility to grow with our business.

“Last year only 14 per cent of plastic packaging was recycled in the UK.

“Given that plastic production and flexible packaging in particular is on the rise, finding sustainable alternatives is essential.

“This is the point Aquapak started from six years ago, to develop a plastic that offers strength, extends shelf life and a choice of reprocessing options once they’ve been used.

“Our research teams have been refining the material and we’re now ready to go into full production at the new plant at Hollymoor Point.”

The plant has the capacity to produce up to 30,000 tonnes of pellets each year.

The pellets can be used to make a 100 per cent recyclable and biodegradable plastic film that aims to improve the amount of plastic packaging that is recycled.

Chief Executive Alan Lusty added: “This is an exciting new phase for Aquapak and one that we’re delighted to be a part of.”

The company, part of Birmingham based engineering company adi Group, won the ‘Most Responsible Product’ award at the Rushlight CleanTech Awards in January for its plastic.
