As thousands of smokers across the country take up the opportunity to be part of a new 28 day challenge to quit, the Dudley Stop Smoking Service is urging local smokers to prepare for their Stoptober challenge with their help and support.
With research showing that people who stop smoking for 28 days are five times more likely to stay smokefree the Dudley Stop Smoking Service is hosting a number of Stoptober events within the borough to help smokers ‘kick start’ their quit attempts.
Anyone wanting help to go smokefree should come along to:
• Huntingtree Park, Halesowen or Silver Jubilee Park, Coseley on Saturday 13th October
• Netherton Park, Netherton or Mary Stevens Park, Stourbridge on Saturday 20th October
where the Stop Smoking team will be offering free health checks and carbon monoxide tests, as well as receiving free help and advice on stopping smoking.
In addition everyone attending the events wishing to make a quit attempt will have the opportunity to sign a giant Stoptober inflatable with their pledge to stop smoking and receive a free information support pack. There will also be the opportunity to win one month’s free gym membership by guessing the number of red balloons in a Fiat 500 that will be on display at the park.
Ruth Olding, Tobacco Control Programme Manager said:
“The Dudley Stop Smoking Service is there to help and support local people who want to quit. Our specialist advisors are based throughout the borough and you can see them either in local pharmacies, your GP surgery or alternatively at one of our eight stop smoking groups”.
The many smokers who take up the 28 day Stoptober challenge will be able to see results, not only in their health, but also their wallet, in next to no time. Giving up a 20-a-day habit is like a £45 per week pay rise.
