REMEMBER, remember the fifth of November will have special significance as a historic Halesowen cricket ground prepares to close after next month’s Guy Fawkes celebrations.
Coombs Wood Sports and Social Club will finally shut on November 5 and reopen in new premises 10 days later.
The club is having to move, after almost a century, to make way for a housing development at its Lodgefield Road site.
Landowners St Modwen controversially won the go-ahead to relocate the clubhouse and cricket ground on part of the Coombeswood Green Wedge beauty spot.
Chairman and steward Nick Jones said it was planned to give the old club a good send off at the bonfire and fireworks event on Saturday November 3.
“The last Bonfire Night celebrations will have special significance and we hope people who remember the place will come along.
“For me, personally, I’ve been coming here since a babe in arms for 46 years, so it will be a sad day when I lock the door for the last time. But we have to look forward,” said Mr Jones.
Gates will open at 6.30pm and the bonfire will be lit at 7.30pm followed by the fireworks at 8.30pm. Admission is £3 for adults and £1 for children. Food will be available and the bar will be open.
