MORE than 2,600 people flocked to Halesowen and Hagley Farmers’ Club’s annual show in Romsley at the weekend with organisers hailing the event a huge success.

The 67th show, in fields at Back Lane Farm, on Sunday (September 22), featured horse and dog shows and a farmers’ market as well as home craft competitions.

Visitors browsed more than 55 trade stands and charity stalls, selling products from honey to bread, preserves, chutneys and wines.

Show co-ordinator Jackie Cartledge said: “It was a glorious day, we were so lucky with the weather which helped make the event very successful.

“All our traders had a good day selling a wide variety of products and we had a lot of favourable comments from the public.”

Jackie said the shire horses proved to be a popular attraction.

Hazel Sheppard, chairman of the horse show, said more than 200 horses took part with pony Parc Monty owned by Carl Raybould taking the title of Supreme Champion and four-year-old Robert Faulconbridge and his pony Littletown Joseph picking up two trophies.

Hazel said: “We had larger numbers of horses showing than they had at the Three Counties!

“It was enjoyed by all - we would like to thank everyone who helped make the day a huge success and the Hodgetts family for allowing us to use their land.”

More than 260 dogs took part in a fun dog show and were entered into categories including best child handler and veteran dog.

Twenty five pooches were microchipped for free by the Dogs Trust.

Charities including the Blue Cross, Stourbride Oxfam and Cats Protection attended as did Central Ferret Welfare, which brought along several rescued ferrets.

The Albrighton and Woodland Pony Club took part in a competition of mounted games, championing the skills of young riders and ponies.

There were also demonstrations from tree surgeons and leatherworker Carolyn Brown and sheep shearing by local farmer Tom Withers.

Organisers also staged a tractor ploughing competition at Whitehouse Farm in Lutley Lane, Halesowen, on Saturday (September 21).
