A HEAVY drinking session following a family funeral resulted in a high speed police chase before an Oldbury motorist crashed into a garden wall.

Ray Turley had been drinking cider and taking cocaine at his cousin’s funeral and downed more alcohol after being driven home by his mother.

Wolverhampton Crown Court was told he decided to drive to his pregnant girlfriend’s home and panicked when he saw the flashing blue lights of the police car.

The 26-year- old tyre fitter sped off, reaching speeds of 80mph before losing control on a bend, hitting bollards and smashing into the wall.

Turley, of Asquith Drive, admitted driving dangerously, with excess alcohol and without insurance or a driving licence.

The court was told he had previous convictions for driving without insurance and without a licence.

He was jailed for six months and banned from driving for three years.

Edward Soulsby, prosecuting, said during the chase, Turley was swerving his vehicle from side to side before crashing and when he tried to run away from the scene he was bitten on the leg by a police dog.

Mark Shawman, defending, added: "It was an act of stupidity. He acted rashly and was in a state of panic when he saw the police car."
