HOUSEHOLDERS on the Oldbury/Quinton border are breathing a sigh of relief following action to tackle a problem alleyway.

Sandwell Council is to install four sets of gates in response to a petition which had 100 per cent support from all 85 homes affected.

Offenders form Community Payback and the council's waste partner Serco have carried out a clean-up in the alleyway, off Kingsway and Walters Road, Overgrown bushes, grass and trees have been cut back and rubbish cleared, paving the way for the council to install gates by the end of the month, with householders provided with keys.

Resident Wendy Stroud, who led the petition, said: "Having the access cleared is a great relief to residents who have suffered litter, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour over many years.

"The gating will give us a huge sense of security knowing we can access our homes and garages safely. “ Councillor Steve Trow, Oldbury town lead member, said: "The safety and security of our local neighbourhoods remains a top priority for the council.

"I'm delighted that even in these difficult times financially we've been able finally to tackle this long-standing problem.

"It's been a real partnership effort by residents, the police, Community Payback and local councillors.

"In particular, Wendy and her neighbour, Rachel Bryan, have worked tirelessly on behalf of all the affected households to achieve this excellent result."
