A KIND-hearted cancer survivor was stunned by the response to her charity night at a Cradley Heath club, which raised more than £1,000 for the hospital that cared for her.

Maureen Lakin, who is beating breast cancer and is now taking part in a pioneering drugs trial, organised the event at the town’s Liberal Club, which featured a disco, tombola and raffle.

The 69-year-old grandmother, of Holly Bush Walk, said: “I was quite shocked really by the number of people who wanted to come.”

Around 140 people attended with more than 60 others who could not be accommodated and Mrs Lakin is planning to have another fundraiser for Breast Cancer to celebrate her 70th birthday.

Most of the £1,160 will go towards buying cancer treatment equipment at City Hospital, with about £100 earmarked for a microwave for the nurses.

Mrs Lakin had a lump removed from her breast in October 2013, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is now trialling a three-weekly injection into her thigh which aims to kill any remaining cancerous cells.
