PUPILS at a Quinton school have been learning how to save lives through the Heartstart programme.

The area’s MP Gisela Stuart called in at Quinton CE Primary School to see them learning how to carry out lifesaving techniques and how the raise the alarm in an emergency.

Youngsters aged from 10 can attend a Heartstart course, and younger children can learn how to make a 999 call and how to place someone in the recovery position.

The programme includes learning skills such as assessing an unconscious patient, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), dealing with choking or serious bleeding and helping someone that might be having a heart attack Teachers were trained by Walsall Manor Hospital’s resuscitation officer, Phil Jevon, so they could pass on lifesaving skills to their pupils.

Educational materials, including manikins, were donated by the British Heart Foundation.
