AN off-duty doctor fought to save a critically injured man who was hit by a lorry on a Halesowen dual carriageway.

The accident happened in Manor Way, near the Grange Road island, at just after 8.40pm on Monday evening.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said the doctor carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the injured man until emergency services arrived.

He said: "On arrival, ambulance staff found an off duty doctor performing CPR on the patient.

"Working together with ambulance staff, the patient's heart was restarted though he has critical injuries.

"He was taken on blue lights to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital where medics were on standby for the man's arrival.”

An eyewitness said he and others also helped resuscitate the man, who was in his 40s.

Matt Evans said: “II was one of first to scene and, along with others, performed CPR whilst waiting for ambulance and assisted once paramedics arrived.”

A West Midlands police spokesman said the lorry driver was helping with investigations but had not been arrested.

He appealed for anyone with information to contact the police on 101.
