A BOOM in silver travellers in Halesowen has been reported as over 55s rush to take advantage of changes to pension rules and put their lifetimes’ savings to good use.

Co-operative Travel reported a 26 per cent rise in bookings after the new rules came into play, which allow senior globe-trotters to claim any amount of cash in one go, up to their entire pension allowance.

In the first month following the change on April 6, the branch said it has seen more bookings and inquiries than ever before from over 55s. Customers aged 65 to 69 have been the most eager to book a trip of a lifetime, according to the research, with short-haul European trips being the most popular.

Kerry Jones, manager of the Hagley Street branch, said Spain and Greece were the top two destinations, although noted that many are cashing in their savings on destinations further afield.

The branch reported an increase in bookings to the USA of 54 per cent amongst the over 55 age group since the new rules were introduced.
