LONG-awaited plans to redevelop derelict shops in Colley Gate look set to be revealed next month.

Cradley Action Group, which has led a two-year campaign for the rundown parade to be revitalised, is hoping details will be outlined at its meeting on Wednesday June 17.

A supermarket chain is known to be interested in the site and the plans will include new units for the existing Modi pharmacy and Golden Cup takeaway.

Cradley councillor Richard Body said there would also be a “community asset” on the site and residential accommodation above the retail units.

He said: “I am pleased we are virtually at the end of many years of trying to get this done.”

Shop owners Shakil Hussain and Edwin Goodman were slammed by the action group and nearby residents for failing to maintain the empty properties – two of which have been boarded up for more than 13 years – and have become eyesores.

Cllr Body said offers had been made to them to purchase their properties and he confirmed they would be made the subject of compulsory purchase orders if the owners refused.

He said: “It has to be that the developer can get onto the land and get the redevelopment started without any further delays.”

Council leader councillor Pete Lowe said the negotiations were at a “very delicate stage”.

He added: “While we are yet to appoint a preferred developer, we are close to our well publicised ambition to breathe new life into the Colley Gate area and resolving the issues at the derelict shops.

“Once we have a developer in place we will be able to talk at length about our plans for the area, which will benefit everyone. In the meantime, we are continuing to work with ward members and we remain committed to resolving this as soon as possible.”

Action group co-founder Richard Legiewicz said they were “delighted” and were looking forward to the name of the developer being revealed, along with the plans, at the meeting at The Laurels Club, Windmill Hill, at 6.30pm on June 17.
