PUPILS are celebrating their Rowley Regis school gaining a royal seal of approval to become a licensed centre for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

The Westminster School is now authorised to grant bronze, silver and gold awards on behalf of Prince Phillip.

The license was presented at an event in Staffordshire, hosted by Phil Brown, Olympic Silver Medal winner in the 4x400m relay back in 1984, and enables institutions to run DoE programmes in their own settings.

The school’s DoE co-ordinator Nick Foster said they were “proud” to be a licensed centre which showed the commitment to the scheme and how highly regarded it was to improve outcomes and opportunity for pupils.

He said: "The awards scheme is a fantastic initiative for our pupils to develop team building, communication and develop skills for life.

“Now we are a licensed centre it provides us with a lot more autonomy and scope to personalise the programme and to allow pupils to fulfil their potential.

“The pupils respond excellently to the award scheme and it is an area of the school that's growing more and more to provide real opportunity for all our pupils.”
