A DERELICT Halesowen old people’s home is to be demolished to make way for a purpose-built care complex and independent living accommodation.

Shenstone House, which has a distinctive copper roof, will be replaced by a 66-bedroom home and six semi-detached bungalows.

Dudley Council’s development control committee approved the plans by the Black Country Housing Group on Monday.

Five letters of objection had been received from neighbours whose concerns included lack of parking, the location of bin stores and loss of trees.

But an officer’s report concluded the removal of trees was justified and 18 car parking spaces were being provided which was above the minimum standard. It added that although the existing building, in Kent Road, was of “an unusual design” and of interest due to its roof, it was not identified as a heritage asset.

Halesowen South councillor David Vickers said: “The building that is there has been vandalised and broken into on a number of occasions. Residents on nearby streets are concerned that vandals may get in and start a fire.

“It is a shame to see the building go but it will be a big improvement.”

Committee chairman Councillor Qadar Zada added: “I’m an advocate of independent living and something like this promotes more care in the community.

“A new care home has got to be better than one that is in a terrible state.”
