SEVENTEEN teams joined in a five-a-side football tournament aimed at uniting communities in Halesowen.

The event, on Sunday, was organised by Halesowen/Dudley Yemeni Community Association at Power League, Park Road, Halesowen, and sponsored by the Black Country Near Neighbours fund.

The fund gave a total of £2,600, which will also finance another football tournament next spring and 10 boxing sessions for young people from local communities.

Association chairman Marwan Bakaili said: "The tournament was very successful and it has brought the local community together as well as surrounding communities."

Teams competed in two age ranges - from 11 to 15 and 16 and over - watched by around 150 spectators.

Trophies and medals were presented by Mayor and Mayoress of Dudley, Steve and Jayne Waltho, Hashim Abdulghalil, chairman of the UK Yemeni Community Coordinating Council, and Kenneth Rodney, chief executive of the Centre for Equality and Diversity.
