TOP Gun fans made a flying visit to Merry Hill when the shopping centre hosted a one-off drive-in screening of the legendary 1980s movie.

Film devotees proved they hadn't lost that lovin' feeling for the 1986 Tom Cruise flick about the US Navy's elite flight school which was shown on a big inflatable screen on one of the intu shopping centre's car parks, off Level Street, last Friday night (August 21).

More than 200 fans of the high-octane outing, which catapulted Cruise to Hollywood stardom, were able - for one nighty only - to relive all the thrills and spills of the original blockbuster, which also starred Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan - and help raise cash for charity in the process.

A Tom Cruise lookalike also put in an appearance and posed for selfies with movie-goers - some of whom had travelled more than 30 miles to catch the screening.

Sarah Dodds, event manager at intu Merry Hill, said the event proved a "soaring success" and raised around £1,200 for children's charity Promise Dreams - the shopping centre's chosen charity of the year.

She added: "Hundreds of shoppers took the highway to the danger zone and watched this cult classic on the big screen but in the comfort of their own cars with popcorn and even a surprise visit from Tom Cruise - well a lookalike at least."
