A SECOND annual football competition run by Halesowen’s Yemeni community has been hailed a success.

Twenty-seven teams from different communities – local and national – took part in the five-a-side tournament on Sunday.

Teams competed in two age groups from 11 10 15 and 16 and over – watched by around 200 spectators.

Marwan Bakail, chairman of the Halesowen/Dudley Yemeni Community Association said: “The tournament was very successful and it has brought the local community together as well as surrounding communities.

“This was our second football tournament and our biggest one yet, we hope to bring many more in the near future “These tournaments have created community cohesion and most importantly have encouraged the young people to participate in positive activities and be a part of the community.”

Trophies and medals were presented to the winners by Dudley’s deputy mayor Mohammed Hanif, Hashim Abdulghalil , chairman of the Yemeni Community Co-ordinating Council UK and Belle Vale councillors Donella Russell and Ian Cooper at the Powerleague centre.

It was sponsored by the Black Country Near Neighbours fund.
