SWIMMERS from across the region descended on Halesowen last Saturday for the ninth annual special Olympics gala.

More than 100 competitors of all ages took part, each swimming in two chosen races plus a relay race.

John Brettle, from the Dudley Olympics, which is affiliated to Special Olympics Great Britain, said there were 65 races in total and the event was a "big success".

Teams came from as far away as Cheshire, as well as Coventry, Redditch, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Sandwell, Worcester, Dudley and Midland Mencap.

The home team entered 47 races and came away with a massive haul of 16 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze medals, putting them in top spot alsogside the Worcester team.

The gala, with medals sponsored by Quantum Print and Packaging, was held at Halesowen Swimming Pool, with assistance from Halesowen Swimming Club.
