A MOTORCYCLIST was flown to hospital with multiple injuries after a smash on the M5 near Halesowen.

The crash happened at about 3.35pm yesterday (July 14) on the southbound carriageway between junctions 2 and 3.

The motorway was completely closed while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

Four members of St John Ambulance who were on a driver training course were first on the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, ambulance staff found a motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, in the central reservation.

“He had suffered multiple serious injuries. Given his position and level of injuries crews had to use extreme caution to safely extricate him.

“He was taken by land ambulance to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham; the doctor and critical care paramedic from the air ambulance travelled with the ambulance to continue treatment en route.”
