Sandwell Council chiefs today issued a stern warning to people not to swim or play in the borough's pools, lakes and canals especially during the heatwave.

They are reminding people not to cool off in park pools and canals but use Sandwell indoor swimming pools instead if they want a dip.

Councillor Richard Marshall, cabinet member for Leisure, said: "We want people to be aware of the risks of swimming in pools or canals however inviting they might seem during his heatwave.

The message is simple - don't go into the water you might not get back out.

"It may look safe, but it can be extremely dangerous. Just because you can swim well in a warm indoor pool doesn't mean that you will be able to swim in cold water."

Some dangers of swimming in outdoor pools, lakes, rivers and canals include it can be very cold, deep, difficult to estimate the depth, there may be hidden currents, there may be hidden rubbish (e.g. shopping trolleys, broken glass), it may be polluted and may make you ill, it can be difficult to get out (especially if there are steep, slimy banks) and there are no lifeguards.

Councillor Marshall: "We’ve got some lovely water features in our parks which are great for fishing, sailing, canoeing or simply walking and cycling by but if it's a swim or a dip you want please go to one of the borough's swimming centres and don't risk your life or the life of a potential rescuer."

Parents and carers are being reminded about the splashpad in Dartmouth Park where children can safely cool off and have lots of fun in the sun during the school summer holidays.
