A MEMORIAL race meeting of radio controlled car enthusiasts is being held in Cradley Heath this weekend to honour Brett Davis who designed the iconic Brum children's TV car.

On Sunday the radio controlled car community will descend on Midlands Raceway, the purpose built on and off road track on Silverthorne Lane, for the Brett Davis Memorial Race.

Mr Davis, who recently died of cancer, designed and drove Brum, the car of the much loved TV series of the same name which ran from 1991 until 2001 and was shown across the globe.

Darren Newton, from the British Radio Car Association, said: "Brett was involved in the RC racing scene for many years and he was also the guy who designed and drove Brum in the popular TV series.

"The guys at Midlands Raceway will be holding a memorial race meeting to pay their respects."

He added: "It will be a great way to celebrate the man by taking part in the hobby which he loved."

Doors open at 10am with races starting at 11am.

Mr Newton added: "It's going to be a fun day, nothing serious and all kinds of cars are welcome so it would be nice to have a mixture of new and old, on road and off road.

"All proceeds are going to be donated to the John Taylor Hospice which did a great job of looking after Brett.

"He will be missed by many and will be in all of our thoughts for a long time."

Midlands Raceway member Mark Pepperell believes Sunday will be the perfect opportunity for people to see the sport in all its glory.

He said: "The track has been running for a couple of years now and is enjoyed by people from aged six to 70-years-old.

"Brett was a character within our community and will be missed by many and if this meeting in his honour gets a few inquisitive people down to the track to see what goes on there then that will be fantastic."
