TRAVELLERS have moved onto land next to Newfield Park Primary School, Halesowen.

The school has had to stop using two classrooms and one playground due to the school overlooking travellers on Whittingham Road.

Belle Vale councillors Ian Cooper, Simon Phipps and Laura Taylor are working with the police to remove them.

Cllr Ian Cooper said: "They are on land between college and school on Whittingham Road, they on came about 9pm last night (Wednesday).

"The school has had to take a few classrooms and a playground out of action because they do not want the children to see anything they should not.

"This has disrupted the life of the school and will be a general inconvenience for everyone as well as cost the taxpayers money."

Cllr Cooper is urging parents to walk their children to school in a bid to cut down congestion on Whittingham Road.

He added: "Travellers are not the Vikings, it is not like Atilla the Hun has pitched up in Halesowen, so everyone should remain calm.

"The police have powers and they will use them, it is just a shame Dudley Council did not pass the blanket ban on travellers using any council land in the borough."
