A FREE running club is being launched in Cradley by a councillor who has lost weight pounding the streets in the last six months.

Cradley councillor Richard Body was diagnosed as obese in the summer and decided to get fit and now he wants to to help his constituents battle the flab too.

Cradley Running Club will meet every Wednesday at Homer Hill Park and everyone is welcome.

Cllr Body said: "Following a health check and being classed as obese I knew I had to do something to become more healthy.

"After walking at speed every morning and living with painful knees for over two and a half months, the pain subsided and I started to jog.

"I never thought I would ever run, as I haven't run for 30 years but now running is part of my life, I'm enjoying it and I have lost 45lb."

Cllr Body wants Cradley Running Club to be as inclusive as possible and runners will even be able to use phone apps to improve their fitness alone.

He said: "This will be a friendly running/walking club for everyone wanting to work on their personal health and fitness.

"We need to support each other to become more active, slimmer, fitter and healthier no matter people's size, age, gender, fitness level or lack of fitness.

"Together we can give each other the motivation and determination needed to become leaner and healthier.

"Regular cardio exercise along with a healthy balanced diet, is proven to benefit both our physical and mental health."

The fitness track located on west side of Homer Hill Park Cradley, offers a 0.54km loop to speed walk or run around, there is also a longer route.

Cllr Body added: "All people will need is a cheap LED head torch or a small hand torch and a drink in a plastic bottle.

"For those more energetic, I will also be organising a once a month virtual local race, 5k, 10k up to half marathon.

"A virtual race costs £10 and 20 per cent is donated to charity.

"Proof of running/walking distance by means of an app or fitness watch device, is emailed to organiser and you receive a different medal each monthly race."

The first meeting is on Wednesday, January 25 at 7pm and for more information visit Cradley Running Club's page on Facebook.
