VETERAN Halesowen South councillor Alan Taylor is demanding the town retains leisure facilities.

The councillor believes Dudley Council will lose vital revenue if it pushes ahead with plans to close Halesowen Leisure Centre and build a new facility in Lye.

He said: "We are working behind the scene to stop this happening, it makes no sense to take a leisure centre from Halesowen.

"It would take two years to build a new leisure centre so the council would lose lots of revenue, which it cannot afford."

He added: "We are supposed to be getting people healthy but if people have to travel all the way to Lye then they will not exercise as much.

"The traffic between Halesowen and Lye is always bad so it will put people off exercising or they will go to private gyms.

"Or people will be forced to use Haden Hill Leisure Centre, which is run by Sandwell Council, so again Dudley Council will be losing out.

"We need a leisure centre within the town centre, whether that be on the current site, on Pool Road car park, or on some other land."
