DEMENTIA awareness events are being held at Halesowen Library this week.

The activities taking place at the Cornbow-based library have been organised as part of Dementia Awareness Week, which runs from until Saturday (May 20).

On Tuesday (May 16), from 10.30am to 11.30am, there will be a free informal information session where visitors can find out how dementia affects people.

Following that event, from 11.30am to 12.30pm, there will be a ‘sweet treats reminiscence’ session. This event will show how using sweets and treats from the past to stimulate taste and smell as a memory jogger can benefit people with dementia and their carers.

Finally, on Saturday (May 20), there will be a circle dancing session from 2pm to 3pm at where anyone is welcome to join in.

Librarian Cara Evans said: “We are pleased to be putting on these events in Halesowen. We hope they will prove useful for dementia sufferers and their carers and families, as well as raising awareness of the condition generally.

“Libraries in Dudley have a wide range of resources to support people living with dementia. They include reminiscence packs, jigsaws, replica newspapers and other activities which can be used to stimulate conversation and memories for people with dementia.

“Halesowen Library also has a Dementia Corner, where anyone can sit and use the resources or choose items to borrow.”

Places on the sessions need to be booked in advance. Tuesday’s sessions are free, but there is a £2 charge for the circle dancing activity.
