A PHILOSOPHICAL Jordanne Whiley was not down on herself despite her quarter final loss at Wimbledon, after fighting back from eight months out injured.

Halesowen’s defending women’s wheelchair doubles champion exited this year’s singles at the first hurdle as the Netherlands’ Diede de Groot beat her in straight sets.

The 25-year-old dropped the first set 6-2 and trailed 5-1 in the second before a mini revival forced a tiebreak.

But she could not maintain her momentum and went down 7-4 in the breaker to leave her focussing on defending her doubles title with best friend Yui Kamiji.

Whiley, though, was just happy to be back on the court after fracturing her wrist late last year, as well as suffering from tendonitis and arthritis in the same joint.

“I had one goal here, that was to try my hardest and enjoy it. I’m not favourite to win and I’ve had eight months out due to injuries,” she said.

“Apart from Roland Garros this is basically my first tournament back.

“I can’t expect to beat someone who’s three in the world when I haven’t been practising how I want to, haven’t been drilling.

“But I’m really proud of myself that I fought to the end and I did have that comeback as well.

“I'm fit enough to compete but I don’t know how it’s going to hold up throughout a tournament because obviously I haven’t really played.

“I’ll just have to see at the end of this week how the injury is and plan from there.”

And Whiley is hopeful that a day’s rest and being reunited with Kamiji can lead to success against top seeds Aniek van Koot and Jiske Griffioen, on Friday.

“My comeback today gives me confidence. I do believe that me and Yui can defend the title,” she added.

“We’ve got a really strong connection and take away the tennis and that connection still counts for something.

“Yui is on form, so she can carry me a little bit and now I can just focus on doubles, look forward to it and put everything into that.”
