THE River Tame Corridor in Oldbury is set to be added to a list of nature conservation sites – if agreed by councillors.
Sandwell Council’s cabinet is meeting on September 20, and they will discuss a recommendation to designate six green areas across the borough as Sites of Local Importance for Nature Conservation (SLINCs).
Councillors will also decide whether to designate Rowley Regis’ Portway Hill as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC).
The latest recommendations have been endorsed by the Local Sites Partnership (LSP) and Natural England.
Councillor Paul Moore, cabinet member for regeneration and economic investment, said: “Our green spaces make Sandwell a more attractive place for people to live, work, play and invest.
“They can also encourage people to improve their physical and mental health and attract new housing to places where people want to live.
“Designating these seven areas will help us protect them from damaging development, complementing our existing network of nature conservation sites.”
Across Sandwell, there are already than 30 SINC areas and nearly 70 SLINC areas, with the council set to assess more sites which have the potential to be designated in the future.
The designations provide up-to-date evidence for planners to protect local nature when making planning decisions.
