HALESOWEN College students gave youngsters from five Worcestershire primary schools one of their first tastes of competitive rugby after organising a recent event.

The level three sports students planned two tag rugby competitions – one for year three pupils and another for year four – as part of their ‘organising events’ unit.

Pupils from St Kenelm’s Primary in Romsley, Clent Primary, Belbroughton Primary, Blakedown Primary and Hagley Primary School were invited to take part in the competition, with the college students being supporting by A level student Geoff Palmer in refereeing the event.

The year three competition was won by Blakedown and the year four competition was won by Belbroughton.

Katy Skinner, sports lecturer at Halesowen College, said: “It was great to see all the students pull together to organize this event.

“All the school children had a great day and really enjoyed themselves.”

Dance students at the college were also busy before their Christmas break by taking part in a special Winter Dance Showcase – performing a range of different styles, including contemporary, street dance and jazz, to an invited audience.

Gemma Sherratt, dance course leader, said: “The Winter Dance showcase is a great experience for our dancers, providing a platform to share the work created this term.

“It enhances their confidence and performance skills as well their technique.”
