A NEW foundation stone has been unveiled by a Blackheath church 150 years after the original was laid.

The historic stone of St Paul’s Church, in Long Lane, was first laid on April 18, 1868, with the new stone revealed by the Bishop of Birmingham, the Rt Rev David Urqhart, during a service on April 15.

In his address, the bishop said: “Looking back we are praying for the future. Christianity has lasted 2000 years, nothing has lasted longer, it’s an extraordinary thing that we’re proud of.

"Many people have never heard the resurrection story, apply this love to this generation.”

St Paul's is now preparing for the 150th anniversary of its opening in February 2019.

The church has launched an appeal to the community of Blackheath and local businesses to get involved in the anniversary events planned for next year.
