An event will take place on Sunday to celebrate the life of a Halesowen man who was murdered just over a year ago.

BENFEST takes place at the Rose and Crown in Halesowen on Sunday, May 6 to remember Benjamin Morse.

One of the organisers of this weekend's event, Stephanie Pugh, said: "BENFEST is about coming together and remembering such a fantastic person, and helping his family, especially his mum Gay and sister Ruth, through this devastating time.

"It is a year since Ben died and although there will not be a day when he is ever forgotten, nothing can stand still, and this event is about doing someone positive."

Although Ms Pugh said it has been a desperately sad time time for his family and friends, she said on the anniversary of his death, on Tuesday, a group of 18 of them descended on the Arsenal ground where a plaque has been unveiled in honour of Mr Morris, a devoted Gooner.

She said: "The sun shone down on all of us at somewhere Ben loved."

Money raised at Sunday's memorial event will go to the group Support after murder and manslaughter (SAMM). Friends and family of Mr Morse's have been fundraising to reach a £5,000 goal, which will pay for a retreat where people who have suffered a tragic loss of this nature, including Mr Morse's mum, will get to meet each other, share experiences, and help each other.

So far various events have been held to raise cash, such as car boot sales, and Ms Pugh, who has been Mr Morse's mum's best friend for 25 years, will also be doing a sponsored 100km walk in September for the cause.

The charity event, which starts at the Rose and Crown at 3pm on Sunday, will feature live music from The Novus, Zhivago, Chris Poole and others and there will be a bouncy castle, barbecue, face painting, a tombola, silent auctions and lots more fun for the whole family. Everyone is welcome.

Mr Morse died after suffering horrific head injuries when he was mowed down by Nidal Alboraiki on May 1 last year.

Unemployed Alboraiki was jailed for life on October 31 last year after a jury had found him unanimously guilty of Mr Morse's murder.
