Construction work on Rowley Learning Campus on schedule

CONSTRUCTION work at the brand new Rowley Learning Campus is on schedule despite January’s snow storms.

Two giant cranes now tower over Rowley Regis as the superstructure of the school buildings are slowly taking shape.

The campus, which will be home to St Michael's Church of England School Business and Enterprise College, Westminster School and Whiteheath Education Centre, is set to be one of the best in the country when it opens next year.

A spokesman for Sandwell Futures, which is implementing the Building Schools for the Future programme, said: “Being on top of an exposed hill, the site team on the Rowley Regis Learning Campus felt the full force of the effects of the snow in early January, but despite that, the work continues with some structure beginning to emerge from the ground.”

“Project manager John Paul Allen has the project very well under control, with the gas main diversion, drainage, Campus Road retaining wall, car-park formation and some superstructure work all progressing to programme.”

He added: “As the steel frame is erected, the shape of the infill to the front of the school is taking shape.”

And the local community has been urged to get involved with the school once it is open.

The spokesman added: “We are trying to give people what they want and not what we think they need.

“We are speaking to the community about what the school can offer them and are always looking for ideas how the school can benefit local people.”

Children at all three schools are also being given the chance to give their ideas about what the campus should include.

There have been workshops at all three schools and ideas so far have included a garden where pupils can get peace and quiet and several ideas about new artwork.

Cantoo is the company working with Sandwell Futures concerning the artwork in all the new school buildings.

A spokesman said: “At the heart of the creative engagement process is a recognition of the vital role artists can play in designing inspiring and transformational schools for the future.“
