Lifeline lottery boost for Halesowen charity

YOUNG people in Halesowen are celebrating after a charity set up to support them won vital Lottery funding to secure its future.

The Phase Trust has been awarded £223,925 over the next three years from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities fund.

The windfall equates to about two thirds of the funding needs of the Little Cornbow-based charity.

Chairman Leon Evans said: “We are acutely aware of the difficulties many organisations are experiencing right now with funding and our hope is that with the award we’ve received we will be able to not only provide much needed youth work but also assist and work with other providers to ensure our young people are helped, supported and empowered.”

The trust, set up by youth workers in the town in 1999, aims to support and guide young people to raise their self esteem, encouraging their social, moral and spiritual development.

It offers support and resources to community groups working with young people, including schools, youth clubs and churches.

The trust’s newly-funded SHAPE project - an anagram of Phase suggested by a young person - will provide activities around urban culture, offering young people opportunities to raise their aspirations, belief and capacity to be in education, employment or training.

These will be run alongside the creation of a live music venue and regular workshops on issues such as weapon crime, relationships, peer pressure and drug/alcohol misuse.

The project will also work with a range of organisations helping address issues of sexual health, anger management and self-esteem.

The trust is also a key partner for The Third Place project which aims to see a landmark community facility built in Halesowen.
